THE CONCEPTION.

The inspiration for this blog comes from my personal observation that the women of Penn State University are in dire need of fashion advice.  Simply put, the majority of women I see on this campus are riding the proverbial “struggle bus,” the fashion struggle bus that is.

Since we are on the topic of buses, it was actually my daily commute, oddly enough, on the campus bus that made me realize the questionable fashion choices made by young women in State College.  I continue to see young women make the same common mistakes every day: wearing UGGs before it snows, wearing UGGs with leggings, wearing leggings as pants (without proper butt coverage), and the list goes on, oh boy, does it go on.  But the bottom line is that the fashion “trends” in State College are so pervasive and god awful that I felt compelled to start this blog.

I think it is only proper to lay out what this blog can and cannot do.  First, I seek to avoid what Lady Gaga—it will become evident in future posts, but yes, I am quite the Little Monster— calls “Extreme Critic Fundamentalism” in her September 2011 V Magazine column.  In this column, Gaga essentially claims that fashion criticism has gone too far and no longer inspires fashion followers/designers.  She argues that even though it doesn’t take much to be a fashion critic these days, a fashion critic still plays a powerful role in stifling self-expression.  Her entire column can be found at http://www.vmagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/V73_GAGA-MEMO_together.jpg if you'd like to read it in its entirety.

I don’t intend for this blog to become an extension of “Extreme Critic Fundamentalism.”  I don’t intend to stifle anyone’s unique and creative style.  If you already have a unique and creative style, this blog is not for you and you should read no further.  This blog is for women who haven’t found a fashion style of their own but want useful fashion advice on a budget.  My fashion motto is, and always will be, BE SASSY, KEEP IT CLASSY.  I will help you do this; I will be your fashion shepherd!

Before I conclude this introductory post, I'd like to include a few disclaimers.  First, I am not a fashion expert, designer, stylist, etc; I’m a law student.  I have learned my fashion “tricks of the trade” through a conscious effort to study fashion trends in my leisure time, and yes, even law students have some time on their hands to keep up with this stuff.  Second, fashion is truly subjective because it is an external representation of your internal character. Since we are all unique, our fashions choices will similarly be unique.  But you have to remember that what you wear is a statement to the rest of the world about yourself. Irrespective of whether you are cognizant or oblivious to your fashion choices, people make impressions based on your external appearance.  I’ll touch on this in future posts.

As a matter of house-keeping, my first fashion “tip” post will come this Saturday.  In the meantime, my assignment for you is to begin thinking about what message you wish to convey to the people around you.  Once you have an idea of what you want to convey, ask yourself, honestly, if your fashion choices fortify this image.  This will be a major theme of the blog, and we will come back to it numerous times.

Alright gals, ‘til next time,

-Be Sassy.  Keep it Classy.
